Black Belt Attitude: Discipline

“The first and best victory is to conquer self.” — Plato

Each week we discuss a Black Belt Attitude topic with the kids in our Warrior Talk. This week’s topic is on Discipline. Please pass this on to as many people as you can. Like dropping a pebble in a pond, the ripples can have a significant effect on someone else’s life.
5 Easy steps to developing Self Discipline (not just for the kids!):

1. DO WHAT YOU SAY YOU ARE GOING TO DO
This is the first step to success. Your word is very important in creating trust. Trust is important in being a leader.

2. LEARN GOOD HABITS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS
If you want to achieve something, set out a clear path to achieving that goal. Gradings in Martial Arts allow the students to set a short term goal, commit to self discipline by regularly attending class and training hard, then finally attaining the new belt. This easy format can be applied to anything in life.

3. WATCH YOUR DIET AND EAT GOOD FOODS
Fast foods and junk foods taste really good, but you won’t feel healthy. Warriors always make sure that the body has plenty of good food such as vegetables and fruit, which acts as fuel to keep them going. Say no to sweets and yes to an apple.

4. STUDY AND DO YOUR HOMEWORK
You don’t have to be the best, you just have to try your best. Be your own winner and be the best YOU can be. Not doing your home work might be cool, but in the long run, failure due to laziness or lack of effort is not the warrior way.

5. DON’T REACT WITH ANGER
Always take a breath and think that if I get angry what will the results be. Will I hurt some one, will I break something, will I make things worse and get into trouble. Martial Arts is about learning to control your emotions such as anger, and hope we become masters in anger management. By being cool and unruffled, we don’t get upset, and work out situations calmly, so that every one feels good about the outcome.
